The cyber security in the era of Internet of Things (IoT) is one challenging and evolving concern. In the critical infrastructure industry, such as Oil and Gas, Petrochemical, Power Generation, even in Nuclear industry, the cyber security is facing its tougher challenges, along with the advancement of communication infrastructure and information technology.
As one of entities in the modern computing environment, IT and ICS (OT) have become integrated parts in those critical infrastructure sectors. The IT side, which has been developed more mature in term of cyber security, it also has its own challenging situation in order to secure the environment by the invasion of new threats and vulnerability, caused by (one of them) the rapid development of the application, framework, system offer that bring new concern against the existing system.
Meanwhile, the OT (Operations Technology) part, or we can use term Industrial Control System as more technical term to represent this segment, it is facing more threatening situation due to its readiness level to face the IoT. Some of the players in this segment still not having adequate capability to understand the risk of cyber security exposure and its controlling actions against their environment. Some of them it just simplify the process by adopting IT framework and implement it just like in IT environment. The bottom line that needs to be emphasized on this matter is the fundamental differences that both environment has, the risk essentials that they have is different therefore the driven action and implementation approach will not be identical.
Challenging process to develop cyber security culture in ICS players is though effort to be completed, but it is not impossible. One of the solution that can be considered is by having proper education and training to let people explore and learn the essentials knowledge and skills as dealing with ICS cyber security. Therefore the security culture in ICS organization can be developed by the time, just as the safety culture in current time.
Join us on our ICS security training, Industrial Control System Cyber Security Management System training and workshop, and be the next ICS security professional.
